Well, the husband has chosen his scarf, and it's not the Pinnacle Chevron pattern, nor the lovely Trendsetter "Kashmir" yarn. It's the one based on the "seaweed" pattern from Barbara Walker's 2nd Treasury of Knitting Patterns, and using "Elen" yarn from Filatura di Crosa (swatch pictured at left). How did he make his choice?
HE SAID (looking at scarf swatches): "Don't you have any black yarn?"
I SAID: "You already have 2 black scarves!"
HE THOUGHT (no, he didn't say this; yes, after almost 14 years together, I can read his mind): Yeah, Einstein, that's because I like black. WHAT HE SAID WAS: "Um, okay, this navy one then. That's pretty dark."
That's it! He picked it because it was dark!
I mean, I like dark. Sometimes after watching Barney with my 2-year-old, I need dark (the urgency of need increasing along with the number of times the horrid purple dinosaur says "Super-dee-duper" and the number of icky song-&-dances performed by ickily grinning children). A few dark minutes of "Reservoir Dogs" or "The Crow" or "Donnie Darko," or even the evening news, can feel like a dose of strong medicine, fighting off the Barney miasma.
But to choose a scarf pattern solely because it's "dark"--what about the feel of the yarn? The texture of the pattern? The color or colors, dark or otherwise?
Oh well. I'm certainly not going to bother the man with questions concerning the scarf borders or where to locate the pattern repeat. Those questions are perfect fodder for a knit blog, after all.
And I'm not going to ask him this question (because I already know the answer): "Which of these would give you a warm & fuzzy feeling, all day long? A: A lovingly hand-knit scarf. B: A B.J."
Men.
I just got a request for "a navy hat" - seriously, all he cares about is something that has nothing to do with the knitting.
