Errata for Wrought Iron Tote

In 2014, shortly after my Wrought Iron Tote pattern was published in Knitting Architecture, Tanis Gray's collection of architecture-inspired designs, I realized that I had omitted the instructions for the contrasting strap edging (an attached I-cord). So I emailed Tanis, and she forwarded my email with the missing instructions to Interweave, to be added to the Interweave website book errata page. I just realized this, because yesterday I got an email from a knitter, saying that the instructions for the strap edging in the pattern photos seemed to be missing from the book pattern. So I found my five-year-old email to Tanis and her response, and then went to the Interweave website. I got excited when I saw the errata file, because it appeared that the book PDF had actually been corrected, and I thought that maybe, if you now purchased the e-book, you would receive the corrected version. How cool would that be! 

Unfortunately the book is no longer available from Interweave; which now has only 32 of their many knitting book titles available on their website. Amazon and Barnes & Noble had both the paperback and the e-version (Kindle and Nook, respectively). After some consideration (and looking at the free sample, hoping it would include the Wrought Iron Tote pages), I decided satisfying my curiosity was worth $10.99, so I purchased the Kindle version. Sadly the corrections WERE NOT THERE. Oh well.

Errata and Notes for Aran Wrap, Vogue Knitting Fall 2008

1)  The wrap is really a big rectangle with sleeves, and when worn, the ends of the top of the rectangle and the ends of the rectangle drape into folds to form the fronts-- or wrap and overlap across the front of the body.  Thus the usual knitted measurements are a bit hard to determine exactly:  for instance the "bust" measurement depends on how the wrap is, well, wrapped.  The shoulder to hem length is less variable, because the sleeves control the placement of the wrap on the body; however, note that this length does NOT include the fold-over part of the collar.  Thus the actual length of the short side of the rectangle, from top of collar to hem, is about 31".  The long side of the rectangle-- the top or bottom edge of the wrap-- for the M/L size is about 49". If you look at the photos you can also see that if left open and allowed to drape, the fronts end up being longer than the back (and longer than the 25" shoulder to hem length given, which is probably most accurate for the back).

2)  In the original pattern I called for the zigzag rib sections to be worked in K1, p1 rib for 7 sts (WS:  (P1, k1) 3 times, p1; RS:  (K1, p1) 3 times, k1) for the 1st 5 rows, then inc 1 in each section as directed in the VK pattern, and THEN begin with Row 1 of the zigzag rib charts (continuing all other charts as established).  The VK directions have you work the first 5 rows of the zigzag charts on only 7 of 8 sts (??).  Okay...but the major problem with their directions is that the zigs and zags will not line up with the cable crosses in the double braided cable DBC) and reversible rib cable (RRC), as I intended (see photos of the back here), if you don't work Row 1 of the zigzag charts with Row 7 of the DBC and RRC charts.

Edited 9/4/08 to add:  You must also decrease in these sections to work the k1, p1 rib at the Right Front edge, shortly before binding off:  after completing Rows 1-24 of the Left and Right Zig Zag Rib charts 11 (14) times, on the next (WS) row: 
Left: p2tog, [k1, p1] X 3
Right: [p1, k1] X 3, p2tog. 
Cont k1, p1 rib as est until bindoff.

3)  Sleeve decreases:  Under "Dec rnd 2" the term "armhole edge" is introduced:  "Work 3 sts tog at armhole edge."  I find this confusing, because by now you are a number of rnds down the sleeve and away from the armhole edge.  Anyway, here I would have said, "Work to 3 sts at center of moss st panel at center underside of sleeve and work these 3 sts tog-- 2 sts dec'd."  Under "Dec rnd 4" I would have said, "Work to 3 sts at center underside of sleeve and work SK2P over these 3 (not 13!) sts.

4)  Edited 8/12/08 to add:  Row 21 of the double-braided cable chart should be the same as row 19, and Row 23 should be the same as Row 13.

Etrusca errata

For patterns purchased before today:  On Row 8 of the Lace Chart, stitches #22 and #30 should be "P on RS, k on WS"; as this is a WS row, you will knit, not purl these stitches.

Deflating the ol' ego

I hadn't heard from many knitters about errors in my patterns, and so I have to admit I was feeling rather smug about my proofreading and tech editing abilities.  As it turns out, what probably was happening was that many knitters purchased one of my patterns, and then after some period of time-- finding the right yarn, finishing up other projects, etc.-- actually started knitting from it!  Whatever the reason(s), in the last few months I've been notified of errata for the Dragon-Skin Wrap, Wyvern Wrap, Fern Fitted Shell, and now the Sorelle Pullover.

Ah well.  At least Interweave Knits has decided to add the Dragon-Skin Wrap to their patterns available for purchase (hope they fixed that chart before they republished it).

Errata for Sorelle Lace-Edged Pullover

If using Berroco Touché for this project, be aware that the sweater may grow in width after it is completed. The sample I knitted (over four years ago) for the pattern has increased in circumference by two inches, while another knitter reported to me that hers increased in circumference by 4-5 inches. In both cases swatches were made before knitting the sweater, and after wet blocking the gauge of the swatches appeared to be correct. 

For patterns purchased before 3/22/08: Under the heading "Raglan Decreases" for sleeves, the directions for the first RS row state, "...k to X* sts before end...," when they should state "...work to X sts before end," because the Four Sisters stitch pattern continues up to the top of the sleeve. 

Patterns purchased after 3/22/08 have been corrected.

*X = 4 or 5 sts depending on size worked and place in pattern.

Errata for Fern Fitted Shell

Optional short row bust shaping:  the directions instruct you to work two rows to pick up all wraps, which would leave a couple of holes on either side of the shaped area.  Instead, after wrapping 4 sts on each side (8 rows), work 1 rnd (you should be on the RS), picking up all wraps and knitting them tog with wrapped sts.  Rep entire short row section once for D cup and twice for DD cup.  Because you add a rnd for each set of short rows worked (when you pick up the wrapped sts), subtract 1 (2, 3) rnds for C (D, DD) cup from # of rnds in next section (after completion of short rows and before dividing for front and back).  

Patterns purchased after January 5th, 2010 include this correction as well as corrections below.  Patterns after March 11th, 2008 but before 1/5/10 include only the corrections listed below.

The first row of armhole shaping instructions is actually put under the heading "FRONT". The first sentence after "FRONT" should read "...k to 5 (NOT 3) sts before right side marker, ssk, SSE". Under "Armhole shaping" (subheading of "FRONT"), the number of times to repeat the two armhole shaping rows is INCORRECT for some sizes: please substitute the following: Rep these 2 rows 0 (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6) times. Same paragraph: number of rows to work even after armhole shaping is incorrect for some sizes: should be 8 (10, 8, 8, 6, 6, 4) rows.

Under BACK: After joining yarn to work RS, begin armhole shaping to correspond to Front immediately; do not knit one row first.

Correction for Dragon-Skin Wrap

I notified Interweave Knits back in late January that there was an error in one of the charts for the Dragon-Skin Wrap for babies and toddlers, but the correction has not yet appeared on their corrections page.  So, if  you are making the smallest size (22" chest circumference) of the wrap, from the IK Holiday 2007 issue, in the "Left-Front Side Edge" chart, all "ML"s should be "MR"s.

Wyvern Wrap errata and updates

I suppose I could go on about lessons learned from rushing a pattern to publication...but I will just add this:  if any purchaser of this or any other of my patterns finds an error and is the first to notify me, I will email them any one of my patterns they choose, free of charge.

Patterns purchased after 6/21/2012:

1. Right Front Opening Edge chart for Size XS chart is mislabeled: use M chart instead. Charts for other sizes are correct; HOWEVER, note that the first 4 chart rows of these charts are shown only to help you find your place in the stitch pattern; first decrease row is actually the 5th row from the bottom.

2. For Size XS only: begin to shape Opening Edge on Row 40, not Row 38. On Row 168 of RF or LF you should have 135 sts for Dramatic sleeve (not 134), 109 sts for Practical sleeve, or 83 sts for 3/4 length sleeve.  Cast on 50 (not 52) sts for Back Neck.

Patterns purchased between 9/2/2011 and 6/21/2012: See below! I have attempted to reach everyone who purchased the pattern between these dates to make sure they have the most-correct version of the pattern; please email me if you have not already heard from me. In the meantime, regarding RF Opening Edge charts, for Sizes XS and M you may use chart labeled 1X; for Sizes S, 2X and 3X use chart labeled XS/M; for Size 1X use chart labeled S/2X/3X. Unfortunately there is not a correct chart for Size L, and I cannot edit the pattern pdf until July 21st--but after that date all corrections will be incorporated into the pattern.

Patterns purchased before 9/2/2011:

1.  RF Opening Edge Charts are mislabeled! For Sizes XS and M, use chart labeled "Sizes S, 2X & 3X." For Sizes S, 2X & 3X, use chart labeled "Size 1X." For Size L, use chart labeled "Size XS." Patterns purchased before 4/7/08: When finishing back neck edging, you will be picking up from cast on, not bound off sts.

Patterns purchased before 2/16/08:

1. Work Right Front first, but leave yarn unbroken to use when joining Right and Left Fronts. 
2. Disregard stitch counts given immediately after side waist shaping increases! They are wrong. I have removed them from pattern because if you are one or two stitches off at this point, it is not important; what matters is (1) that the sleeves end on the Dragon Skin pattern stitch noted, (2) that when the back neck stitches are cast on, the total number of back stitches are correct, as noted, and (3) the Right Front is worked to correspond to the Left Front.
3. After waist shaping increases are completed, work even on side edge, BUT continue opening edge decreases every RS row.
4. Note that marking where sleeve sts begin will only work for sizes L and 2X; stitch pattern inc/dec in the other sizes will cause the marker to move from row to row. Instead, BO same # of sleeve sts CO, and make sure you have the right # of Back sts remaining afterward.

 

Progress on Wyvern

Now that I've completed several deadline projects, I can get back to work on Wyvern.   I've finished both fronts and joined them to start on the back.  I finished the right front first and blocked it to make sure my gauge was on, before I started the left front; as you can see, the blocked right front piece is noticeably bigger than the unblocked left front piece.

It's slow going on the sleeves/back combination:  those are long rows to hoe knit!  Plus, I have to decide just how I'm going to work stripes of coordinating color into the mix; I'm quite sure that I don't have enough yarn to finish with the Trilly alone.  It will help keep me going, knowing from experience that the lower back, after the sleeve stitches are bound off, seems to fly off the needles.

(Purchasers of this pattern please note that there are some pattern errata on the pattern page, at the bottom:  aside from the glaring stitch count errors after the side waist shaping increases, they are more like clarifications-- at least I like to think of them that way  :-(  )

Clarification for Lutea knitters

I'm afraid my sketch of Lutea's architecture will have to be put off for a post or two; without going into tedious detail, I will say that I've been uber-busy with both non-knitting matters (above:  the view from my new home office) and non-bloggable knitting.

But, I've had several emails from knitters working on Lutea (and congratulations to them for finding me:  does anyone know why Interweave did not put any email addresses or websites at the end of the patterns in this issue?), and I wanted to address their question (yes, they all had the same question) here.  Karen wrote: 

"The first row of the lace pattern says: K2, *yo, k1, yo, k3, repeat from * to end.  I do not have enough stitches for this to come out even.  Is there a typo somewhere?" 

Well, either Interweave edited my original pattern for space, or they simply made an error, and omitted  "end row with k2 instead of k3."  Anyway, they now have corrections up on their website, and have essentially restored my original directions.

Felicia also emailed me about the same paragraph in the pattern; she brought up the fact that the number of stitches changes on some of the rows of the lace pattern.  IK does mention this in a note just before the directions for working each row of the lace pattern; in my original pattern submission, I added this note at the end of the directions for rows 1 (when the sts are increased) and 3 (when the original number of sts is restored).

So read your directions carefully, knitters!  But if you find this part of the "Lutea" pattern confusing, know that you are not alone.
